Inspired by films and literature during his youth, Edward C. Byers Jr. aspired to become an elite soldier in the United States military. After a deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 1999, Byers was accepted to attend Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training. He graduated with BUD/S Class 242 and fulfilled his dream of becoming a Navy SEAL.

On December 8, 2012, Byers was part of a hostage rescue mission involving an American Physician being held captive by the Taliban. After a difficult hike to the target, Byers' SEAL team reached the compound where they believed Dr. Dilip Joseph was being held.

Following closely behind Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas Checque, Byers entered the compound, shooting dead an armed Taliban fighter and engaging others in fierce hand-to-hand combat. During the firefight Byers would use his body to shield the Dr. Joseph from enemy fire.

After the successful rescue of Dr. Joseph, Byers noticed Nicolas Checque had been wounded during the firefight and attempted to resuscitate him, but Checque would eventually succumb to his wounds. Nicolas Checque was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions.

For his actions Edward Byers was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 29, 2016.

We had an ex Navy Seal in my hiking club that I got to know. He knew I was ex Navy too, but a radarman. One time I encountered him going up a very steep hill near Auburn CA we call training hill. I was walking and he was jogging. He invited me to jog up the hill with him and I did for about 100 yards but I couldn’t keep up with him so I told him to continue jogging and I would walk the rest of the way up and meet him at the top. I’ll never forget what he said which was no, I’ll walk up with you, we never leave a man behind. I said you were a Seal and I was a radarman, that doesn’t count, you guys did pushups and we just pushed buttons. He said yes it does, we are both ex Navy, we were on the same team and we walked the rest of the way up the hill together like brothers. This was a really tuff guy built like a bulldog but yet he had a fierce and humble sense of supporting a team member even if he was just a skinny ex navy radarman.
  • One of the good things about being an American, is knowing that if you ever get captured like that, whether they are able to pull it off or not, there are men like this man, who are planning and trying to figure out how to come get you, and will pull out all of the stops to do so. I think just knowing that would help me get through something like that.

Thank you for your service sir, Mr. Edward! I was a 14 years old Vietnamese refugee. America 🇺🇸 has took me in and gave me freedom! I would never, ever, forget the ultimate sacrifices of men and women! I took the opportunity that America gave me to study and work hard. Today, I am enjoying a good life and able live the American Dream. Thank you to ALL Americans that help me. Americans are beautiful people with big hearts. My four children are now AMERICAN 🇺🇸 ❤️
  • He did a lot more that night than he told us in order to earn the Medal of Honor, but he doesn’t need to go around bragging about everything he did and went through that night like a lot of guys. He is a true humble warrior and has all of my respect.

The weight of responsibility that the MOH carries is huge and every single one of these men carries it with class. These are the roll models that we need in this country not the athletes and actors that we have now.
  • @jameshunter5485
I am always struck by interviews with recipients of the MOH or Victoria Cross at their sense of responsibility in wearing it. To a man everyone of them always credits their fellow warriors. Thank you sir for your service. You wear the medal well.
  • If the leaders in our government had one tenth of Mr. Edwards integrity, our country wouldn't be in the sad situation we are today. Thank you for your Service sir!!
  • This is what a real navy seal looks like..a true hero...
  • @amahana6188
He’s leaving out a lot of detail. This man is too humble to tell us how fierce the fight actually was. 🇺🇸
  • @Range-X
Guys like these deserve more than a discount at a store or a passing thanks for their service. I hope everyone that walks that walk is rewarded in life and gets what they truly deserve.
  • @barnbersonol
This is what a real hero is like: he doesn't swear, he doesn't act big. He just humbly pays tribute to other people.
  • @hoot1141
What I love about Ed is that he never forgets to mention Nick when he tells his story. He NEVER forgets Nicks sacrifice. Ed is the real deal. He truly an honorable warrior.
  • The precision with which he uses language to describe how swift and brutal the execution of this operation was performed shows the amount of safety debriefs he's been through. Extremely technical. Zero fluff. Pure intel.
  • Who needs superheroes? This gentleman is so articulate, humble and gives me pride to know that there's people that will give their life for their fellow man simply because it's the right thing to do. This man has my highest respect .
  • @Sketti7.62
This man was a graduate of my high school and visited to give a speech and have lunch with all of us one day after receiving his Medal of Honor. I was a young kid but it was awesome and he is an amazing guy. There were a million kids tryna sit with him lmao
