These subs simply demonstrate that during periods of rapid technical advance, the best you can hope for are experimental designs to learn what does and does not work.

Somebodies on a submarine binge

Barracuda, Bass and Bonita happen to be some of the fastest fish in the pond; the boats named after them apparently not so much.

"Ooh, barracuda!" ~Heart Glad that the different countries finally realized that submarines served a fleet best when used as picket ships well in front in the fleet and operating on their own.

In the book "Thunder Below" Fluckey recounts a story to his officers of his time on USS Bonita where he was the dive officer. He told of when Bonita, along with Barracuda and Bass were transiting out of the Panama canal and into the Pacific. All three boats did a trim dive at the same time and Fluckeys boat was the first to dive and first to trim so the periscope could be used. The other two boats were under for a few minutes before being able to take observations. The reason for this being Fluckey, being the dive officer and an amateur Oceanographer, knew the fresh water from the canal and the salt from Atlantic had different levels of salinity. In his words he "balanced his checkbook" by pumping out 8000 pounds of the heavier Atlantic water and thus his boat was able to dive and trim in record time. He used a battery hydrometer to take the proper readings.

That looks absolutely terrifying to serve on. Brave men.

What this class was missing is clearly a 426 HEMI.

Should have used Barracuda by Heart as the intro music. (am I the only one old enough to remember Heart? They were kinda big, for a while)

I used to play them a lot in Silent Service 2. They were actually quite good in this game.

My grandfather served on Barracuda during the '30s as a LTJG.

I really like the post S and R class submarines and pre Gato or Balao class submarine designs. Barracuda, Porpoise, Narwhal, Argonaut etc.
