American Cars

Jon had a mustang, Mark bought a Road Runner, Bobby loved his blue Trans Am
I drove a pick up, Billy liked his rag top, Eddie had the party van
We had 4 barrel, dual quads, Hooker headers, Holley carbs
Hurst shifter, six by nines
440 6 pack, power break, posi-trac, lots of chrome lots of shine

We could talk all night on the hood, change our lives in the backseat
Dream about the open road, every time we turned the key
Those were the days that we, had a girl and song, hit gas and we’re gone
Like they are, when we all drove American Cars

Daddy drove Cutlass, mama had a wagon with the classy panel sides
When we got the keys it was out chance to see, just how the family care could fly
We liked the stoplight drag race, brag about first place
Exaggerate our top speed
There’s nothing like the sound, or the feel on the ground
Of more horsepower than you need

We could talk all night on the hood, change our lives in the backseat
Dream about the open road, every time we turned the key
Those were the days that we, had a girl and song, hit gas and we’re gone
Like they are, when we all drove American Cars

There we some guys in town we didn’t know their name
We just knew’em, didn’t talk to’em, they drove through and
We just knew them by their cars

A few years ago I got an itching in my bones, bought a 69 Super Sport
Together with my son when the weekends would come, we couldn’t wait to get to work
It was a top to bottom detail, Muncie tran, Crager wheels
Painted her a Rallye green
Now he drives her down the street, she’s a fire breathing piece
Of American history

Now he can talk all night on the hood, change his life in the backseat
Dream about the open road, every time he turns the key
Those were the days that we, had a girl and song, hit gas and we’re gone
Like they are, when we all drove American Cars
