The U. S. Marine Corps hymn starts with"From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli", and this film's story purports to be the reason why, and is give or take a few incidents in this movie: It is 1805 and the Tripoli pirates have challenged America's right to freedom of the seas---all of them, anywhere---so United Stares warships were sent to that port to bottle up their fleet and set the riff-raff right concerning who could sail where. (History begins to suffer a bit along about this point.) A U. S. Marine unit, headed by Lieutenant O'Bannon, was sent to attack them from the rear. He organized his unit around Hamet, Pasha of Tripoli, in exile after being overthrown by his brother. In Hamet's court was Sheila D'Arneau, a diploma's daughter, who disguises herself as a dancing girl, and joins the group of eight U. S. Marines and Hamet supporters in their march across the Libyan desert. O'Bannon and Shelia argue all the way to Tripoli.

An entertaining movie, based on an actual events with a romantic twist. The battle of Derne 1805, The First Barbary War. The Marine's Hymn, always a good moral boaster. Thank you for hosting this movie.

Maureen O'Hara was the best actress at giving her leading men what for, and making you believe it. Toe to toe with John Wayne, Brian Keith, Jimmy Stewart, etc. An absolutely, one of a kind, beautiful lady.
  • The Constitution was a three masted ship, designated a Frigate. In its glorious history, it was named by the Sailors that sailed her, "Old Ironsides". This was due to the oak planks that made her hull, were so tough, cannon fire would just bounce off her hull. I am a history nut, and avid model builder. I had a magnificent model I made on our mantle above the fireplace of her for many years. Full rigged.
  • "If you were under my command you'd be court martialed" "If I were under your command I'd be dead." Some good lines that made me chuckle.

"From the Halls of Montezuma, to the SHORES of Tripoli. My son is a Marine and he and I are both proud of his service. May God continue to Love and Protect the USMC. Can I get a AMEN??

My grandson is a direct descendant to O Bannon. When he joined the marines they made a big fuss over it. He was blown away.

I clearly remember my stint in Libya while working for a construction company in Wafa, near the border with Algeria. That is part of the Sahara Desert and the place is really inhospitable. Too hot during summer and a long cold winter from October to early May. We have to endure the worst sandstorms in our lives. I have experienced sandstorms in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar, but Libyan sandstorm is the worst.

Thanks for posting, I loved this flick when I was a kid. It was one of the many reasons that motivated me to become a Marine. Semper Fi!

I really enjoy these old movies. No whiz bang, bells and whistles. The needed to write dialogue. Actual sets, no CGI, That is what makes it for me.

I was going to say that Maureen never looked more beautiful - but I say that almost every time I watch one of her movies!

Ah the eternal friendly rivalry between the Marines and the Navy. The former thinks of the latter as a taxi service whilst the commonly held belief of the Navy is that the Marines are an acceptable substitute for ballast. All joking aside, really do enjoy seeing classics like this.
  • I love the whole wonderful story. The hero, his rich friend/ second, the tough guy sargent that knows all the tricks of native people and the FAKE rich girl with her servent/ big sister friend. The sargent and the servent both have good hearts and they should get them together in a behind the scenes romance that work together to management help for their charges to accomplish the mission and a happy ending. I have not seen this movie before, that I can remember.
