Generator Hunting/ Surging In Cool Down Mode

Published 2018-11-07
Here I am finishing up my maintenance on a Kohler generator. The machine runs smoothly until it goes into a cool down. Then it starts hunting. I get into the controller software and correct the hunting

That's awesome how you can change the time like that I can't wait to see a more detailed on more of that stuff. Thanks for the great video.
  • This man has a great channel. You will learn chillers, boilers, generators, RTU, and etc. This is great for the industry

I agree with Denise Adams. It would be quite helpful if you clearly said what exactly you adjusted to stop the hunting.

What software do you use to monitor the diagnostic and/or modify the operating parameters? Could I do this with a Mac?
  • Surging usually has to do with fuel/air mixture issues in most small engines. Interesting how speed gains can affect it also.
  • Great video, added WHG 6 years ago. Loose power at the least little storm in my area. Also today when gen started to exercise, had constantly surge. Video showed me a few things to check before I call service tech.

What is a good standby generator? Is Kohler 8RESV good? My house is small, no large electric loads, and only 2 ton AC. Most appliances are gas.

Which brand home generator would you say has the least amount of failures? The most reliable, and just work so long as scheduled maintenance is performed as per the owners manual. Thanks

Very cool to see after getting a question answered in class yesterday. My standing question has been: In what areas is HVAC changing or improving its technology? So I can shift or add direction in my learning path. One thing I heard was about proprietary software programming for VFDs in compressor efficiency. So to see a laptop out to solve a problem was confirmation. What do you see changing in industry? While I’m in school I’d like to see what needs there’ll be later on in related trouble shooting. Thx for your time, thx for video

Hi HVAC Hacker - love the videos. I'm also in NJ and having the same issue on my Kohler but cannot change the settings as a homeowner. Any way I can get your company's contact info to get an estimate/quote on that kind of update? Thanks!

Sounds and looks like a cat trying to hack up a hair ball.
  • Great video, but you seem to work on a lot of Kohler generators. Is this normal, would you ever recommend a kohler generator to someone? or would you recommend something like a generac.
