The Myth Made Fact: Reading Greek and Roman Mythology through Christian Eyes with Dr. Louis Markos

Published 2024-05-17
"Jesus not only fulfilled the Old Testament law and prophets, he fulfilled the highest yearnings of the pagan people... He has fulfilled specific Old Testament prophecies, but he is also the true myth, the true Dionysus, the true Hercules, but without the horror of those Greek myths."

How do the ancient myths point to Christ? English Professor at Houston Baptist University, Louis Markos, returns for a second conversation with Socrates in the City’s Eric Metaxas to discuss C.S. Lewis, Pandora’s Box, Genesis, and much else along the way.

Love the passion, insight and the way they use their familiarity to play off each other so well, a microcosm of the Tolkien and Lewis interactions. What a blessed conversation.

Galatians 4:4 "But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,"

This is a great talk. I write Fantasy Books and over and over, Christ story is played out or as close as a broken human can get to it. Thanks for sharing it. Picked up Dr. Markos's book. Sounds fascinating to read.

8:04 okay, Tolkien continues to blow my mind. I just had a realization. Correct me if I’m wrong. Gandalfs name was also known as “Mithrandir” and the Persian demigod (another important point) referenced is “Mithras”. Is Gandalfs other name, a foreshadow and archetype to his story. Life, violent death, and return to life and wise old man (who is a demigod of sorts).

White tux with boat shoes? Curious wardrobe choices. Great conversation.
  • It isn't "waking up "exactly, it was that God revealed the Son on that ride to his mind and soul. Matt.11:25-27
  • Greco-Roman education was infused with Classical models of human behavior. Plato be damned ;-)
