If you're Craftsman, Chamberlain, etc garage door opener is closing and then opening up - its likely a common problem related to the stop limit mechanism. Here I explain how it works, what can go wrong, and how to test and fix it.

Want to support my channel? Here are a few Amazon links that help me do that - it doesn't cost you any extra to use them and I would certainly appreciate it!

Stop shooting the messenger ...appreciate that charlie has taken his own time to go into detail about explaining the problem...He is a great instructor...hats off to him
  • This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've watched 30+ garage door videos and none of them have been this informative. I now know exactly what to do. Thank you so much!

When you just want to make your garage door stay closed and you come out of a video knowing how to make a robot.

Great Video! You steered me to the broken gray wire that was the problem. Spliced it back together and was fixed. Saved me a lot of time and money with something that most people could fix themselves without calling a repairman. Especially liked they way you shared how you figured things out. You tend to learn more things that way. Thanks again!!

Thanks so much for all the detail. I was at a loss until I watched your video. The fact that you discussed the wires was what made the difference. Once I took off the "hood" I saw a wire had broken. I fixed the wire and the garage opener works normally now. Thanks to you, I don't have to have someone come out and fix it...Appreciate the help.

It's guys like you that make Youtube amazing and such a good place to learn how to fix everyday problems! I get so much satisfaction from fixing something like a garage door opener rather than just buying new. It also saves money, of course! Thanks for taking the time and effort to post your video!

Great video. Like others, I opened dozens of videos showing you how to clean and allign the lens on the safety beam, which I knew wasn't the problem. I had a bad switch on the stop limit, which was a quick fix once I knew what to look for. Well done!

The spring that make the connection at the gray wire was my problem. Couldn’t close the circuit. I bent the spring and now my problem is fixed. Your continuity explanation of the gray wire led me to the spring. Thanks so much!!!
  • Was having the same problem, I watched your video and fixed the gray wire by soldering in a new wire and it fixed my problem. Thanks, it saved me buying a new opener.
  • Thanks for the video. I had a similar problem with my door opener. I went through the usual troubleshooting guide and made adjustments, but the door wouldn't stay down. I also noticed the sliding piece on the rail hit both the top and bottom stops. I took off the cover and right away noticed a broken wire. An easy fix! I tried it and it worked, then some minor adjustments and all was working as it should. Thanks for the video. You saved me spending $200 on a new garage door opener. Thanks again.

Thank you so much. My garage door opener had the grey wire snapped in half. Thanks to your video I could fix it less than an hour

Excellent troubleshooting. Thorough explanation. Thank you for your effort, time and posting.
  • Great video. I was having the problem with the door fully closing and then opening, which seemed to be intermittent. Your clear explanation of the limit adjustments and wiring gave me the info I needed to avoid replacing the whole thing. Thanks.
  • Thank you so much ! We have had this problem for years. I opened it up and it was the wire snapped off I ended up replacing the wire and that fixed the issue thank you !

Thank you for making this video - don't worry about comments from people who don't have any patience and will never fix anything on their own. I have a Chamberlain opener that my son uses primarily. It started not wanting to stay shut in the winter in MN no less. He told me that when he opened it, it went up a little and then stopped. Then he closed it and it opened back up on its own. Then he left and shut the door (he thought) and it opened itself again after he took off. In the meanwhile my garage heater was going full blast for two hours til he came back home from skating and told me that it wasn't staying shut... Anyway, I was able to fix mine by adjusting back the down-travel by about 3/4 of a turn. I diagnosed mine by disconnecting the trolley and running the unit. It did not return after moving down the track so I figured an adjustment would probably do it for now. I have a feeling the door was maybe frozen to the floor and it jumped a tooth either in the housing or on the screw drive when it had a hard time opening. Either that or I may need to get out the soldering iron and do some surgery like you did. Thank you for providing the in-depth info on this and showing the internals of your opener. I thought the length of your video was perfect and I enjoyed the humor as well. :)

I'm only 4 minutes into this video and I'm satisfied that this will result in a fix for my problem. Very thorough.

Thank you for your this video, so far for me the "down" knob/screw adjustment fixed my problem. If it shows up again I will know next steps. Cheers.
  • Thank you brother, I ran into the same situation and this solved my problem, although my issue was related more with the main power/higher voltage issue. Thank you for your leg work!! I know it took some time for you. I hope this video works both in your favor and others like us trying to solve our garage door gremlins. Awesome!!! Thank you!
  • Thanks as I got my Chamberlain opener repaired & running! What I thought were two short antenna wires were a stretched broken wire. Once repaired I had to reset all the up/down adjustments but it all works!

Ok. I opened up the craftsman opener and found the gray wire to the limiter switch was completely broken in two pieces. I added another three inches of wire between the two ends via western union splices, soldered, shrink tubed both splices, reconnected, plugged it in and it’s working great now. Thanks for the video. It let me know what the probable cause was and you were spot on 🙂👍🏻
