How Hydrapple Overcomes its Awful Typing Competitively

Competitive Pokemon

With the release of Gen 9 Indigo Disk DLC, the newest pokemon, Hydrapple has been ridiculously powerful to start off in Gen 9. Despite its weak grass and dragon typing, this Pokemon has been surprisingly good within the competitive scene, being ranked in high viability. With new tools like its new move in Fickle Beam, its seems like a legit threat in the OU tier. Let me know in the comments below what you guys think of Hydrapple in Gen 9.

Gen 9 OU

(Frequent Questions)
Q: Where is the gameplay from?
A: Pokemon Showdown
Q: How are the sprites looking like generation 5?
A: Click the settings button and you can change the sprite display
Q: Why is the gameplay have the opponent being dumb?
A: Well surprise its me playing as the opponent as well and having Pokemon faint every 5 seconds isn't as fun as seeing the Pokemon do something in the battle for some time, which is why the gameplay seems like the opponent is braindead. Although I have taken some feedback and have tried to make it more interesting as possible without making the Pokemon faint every 5 seconds for hopefully better entertainment.

I appreciate that fickle beam has decent enough base power to not feel like a wasted turn when you dont get the 2x multiplier. kinda feels like fishing for crits.
  • Fickle Beam is the mentality and idea of "FUCK IT! WE BALL!" made into a move. It is the single most hype move in the game when the homies show up for the Fickle Beam.
  • @TheMinals1
Fickle beam is actually the funniest move ever I love it
  • @PolybiusStreams
Something about Appletun and Flapple now, they don't stack up to Hydrapple because they have the stats of a middle evolution with Hydrapple having 55 more base stats. I hope the other apples get another evolution cause I love Appletun and want more apple dragons. It's crazy how many designs they've gotten out of the concept.
  • @TundraRage
Did you know Hydrapple is the first grass type non-legendary with a BST of 540 or above?
  • @ktvx.94
Fickle Beam is like a pseudo high-crit chance move that can also crit on top of that

Gamefreak should have made bug resist to fairy (like how fairy doesn't want to hurt forest animals). It would also make bug less horrible defensively.
  • @ElectricFortune
The thing about Grass/Dragon is that it has 3 quad resistances to Electric/Grass/Water and a very useful resistance to Ground that allows Hydrapple to come in on these hits more or less for free, and Hydrapple has the defensive stats to take a subsequent non-STAB coverage move (unless it's Ice). Grass/Dragon is by no means a good typing, but I wouldn't say it's outright terrible either.
  • @bapbeepskull
Actually happy the Applin line are being viable in OU rn
  • I love the animation and text for the Fickle Beams sometimes. Hydrapple used Fickle Beam (The other four heads pop out, agreeing to destroying an OU meanace - Ogrepon Hearthflame) HYDRAPPLE IS GOING ALL OUT FOR THIS ATTACK!
  • @robbierotten2024
I’ve been using eject pack recycle Draco meteor leaf storm hydrapple and it’s been nice. Being able to switch out and activate regenerator after throwing out a 130 base power stab move is nice. It’s like having 130 BP uturn on a good special attacking regenerator mon

In addition, with Hydrapple being able to pressure opponent's with Yawn, if they decide to not switch out to attempt to take out Hydrapple for good with a move like Ice Beam, or if they just are too attached to their super awesome Pokémon they spent 3 turns setting up, Hydrapple combos incredibly well with the newly unbanned Darkrai. This makes it so the sleeping Pokémon gets hit by Bad Dreams, and allows Darkrai a free Nasty Plot to go on a tear with it's amazing coverage. It won't work 100% of the time, but I think it definitely reinforces Hydrapple's viability, on top of Darkrai's to an extent.
  • I never saw dragon grass as that bad. It is 4x resistant to water and electric and resists ground type...3 really common attack types so you'll find a chance to switch it in. Maybe I'm crazy.
  • @lunar9342
Hydrapple is the overachieving sibling of the Applin line. Still salty they didn't even let the other ones become solo Syrupents or anything*. I WANT MY APPLE PIE TO BE VIABLE, GAMEFREAK!
  • @imp4209
The middle head of hydrapple is like a responsible sibling always trying to get his siblings to get up and fight
  • @misters6749
How does it overcome the Typing issue? My guess: Recover, Regenerator and Solid Defences?
  • You use appletun for thick fat, granting a fire resist and lowering the ice weakness to x2. Has good setup moves to work with too.
  • @justmob9917
Can't describe how happy it makes me to see a variation of this stupid apple be good finally. I loved the goober ever since it was introduced
  • @DistantKingdom
really love the design on this one! the golden apple shiny is so clean
