Welcome back to Unguided! I have been trying to get this video out for a few months but as you know, life gets in the way sometimes. Here it is - our 2023 Montana hunt. Like our mule deer hunt videos, we hunt all public land out west and sleep on the ground wherever the hunt takes us. This year, we decided to hunt the elk in the middle of their rut. As many of you know, this is an archery only season, so that means getting as close as possible to the magnificent animals. It also means trying to speak their language, using bugles and cow calls to try and trick these bulls into coming in our range. It is NOT an easy feat. I had only bow hunted elk once before, 8 years prior in Colorado. I did not do any calling then, so this was actually my first time trying to do it in an active hunt. I'm sure I'll get roasted in the comments for my calling skills, but this is how you learn. My partner in this, Slaton, had hunted them before but never in the rut during archery. So needless to say, we didn't have much experience doing this particular style of hunting. All and all, we learned so much on this trip about these animals and how they operate. We found elk right away, and had many great encounters with them almost every single day. We finally were able to put a shot on a good bull, and you'll just have to watch the video to see what happens! This is by far some of the best footage I have shot out west to date. After this trip, I have decided I cannot let a single fall season slip by without trying to hunt elk somewhere in some fashion. I already have plans for 2024 to return to Colorado for the 4 day limited rifle season in October, and I couldn't be more thrilled. I hope you guys enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed filming it!

While on this same trip to Montana, we took a raft and did a 3 day float down the Clark Fork river, camping on the bank along the way. It was EPIC! I know this channel is mostly bluewater fishing, but going back to the freshwater and throwing flies around was a nice change of pace. Especially in some of the most beautiful country in the world, western Montana. There is a small preview at the end of this video, so be sure to check that out and be on the lookout! It should be uploaded by the end of February.

Thank you guys for coming back to the channel for our content, and if you're new on Unguided, hammer that like button and subscribe! We have so much more coming! See yall next time.

  • You guys know that elk in the beginning wasn’t “fired up” ? It was barking because it knew you were there and was letting out its warning.

You guys must be Midwest whitetail hunters. That’s an alarm bark. Also, work on your calling 😂

That's a lot of elk and deer for an area. Being that you're out of state hunters what unit were you in?

Barking at you and being really worked up, 2 completely different things! Smh.

Not much backcountry so far...lots of elk on private agriculture. Good video though.
