I had breast cancer at 26, if I didn’t get a mammogram, I’d be dead now

This is a lot of harmful information. There is risk involved with every medical decision/procedure. But to hear a ‘medical professional’ say they’re not interested in a mammogram is wild.

As an oncology RN I really urge everyone to get routine screenings. These could save your life.
  • Quick note-this woman isn’t a physician. She’s a nurse practitioner, her training is less than half of that of a physician.

If I didn’t get a mammogram at age 37. I would’ve never found my breast cancer. I was very very low risk woman…I know so many women who found they had breast cancer due to getting a mammogram way before they would have felt the lump. What you’re saying is dangerous. It scares me to think women will hear this and think they shouldn’t get a mammogram.

What you’re not hearing: she knows the genetic predispositions and where her own genetics stand in relation, the symptoms of having breast cancer, she (no judgement) appears to have a smaller chest that makes feeling/noticing lumps easier in, and has been medically trained to preform breast exams and likely does them on herself regularly. She also has decided that, for her, it’s worth the risk To HER. You on the other hand, are not her. Please do not take her word as permission to never monitor or maintain your own health.

My Mom had negative mammograms for years. The ultrasound tech said she suggested my Mom ask for a breast MRI because her breasts were dense and mammogram could miss stuff. She insisted on the MRI and they found a mass which turned out to be breast cancer. A breast MRI will find far more than a mammogram and has no radiation. Why is this not standard then?? Because mammogram are cheaper, potentially cause breast damage, and the MRI are rarely initially covered by insurance. We need female doctors and politicians pushing for better coverage and treatment for women’s health issues.
  • I work at a breast center and I cannot tell you how important it is to get your yearly screenings, or at least every other year. It doesn’t hurt that bad. I’d take a mammogram over a gynecological exam any day. We are regularly finding breast cancers in younger and younger women with no family history at their first mammogram. (30’s) I believe it mostly has to do with all the GMO and processed foods the government allows, but in any case it’s happening.😢

being exposed to radiation increases your likelihood of getting cancer in general so is the risk higher than a regular X Ray? And what system are people opting in to? The healthcare system? It’s really important for people especially women to get checked out for breast cancer for early treatment no matter the method so pls stop posting fear inducing content that can affect the way people approach their health without full context
  • My friend felt a lump and got checked. Age 27, she died 3 years later after fighting cancer. My takeaway is if you’re concern keep fighting until you get the medical care you need. Be your BEST advocate because sometimes doctors dismiss you based on age.
  • As a training rad tech this kind of misinformation is exactly what keeps people from getting the treatment they need. We specifically go to school and train to give you the correct dosage and time for radiation so that we can help you, and it is literally our number one job to make sure you are only exposed to the necessary level of radiation for the needed exam/image anything more is literally malpractice.

It’s well known every mammogram you receive increases your risk by 1%. There is also a term within the medical community - VOMI, Victims Of Medical Imaging. Go looking and you are bound to find something. Once you find something, then you need to address it. Now you are in the system. Now you are in surgery (risk), now you are on meds (side effects), now you are in the hospital (exposure to infections).
  • This person might change their mind .. you can always be the first person in your family to get breast cancer.. so not having a mammogram would be like playing Russian roulette
  • This is probably one of the worst takes on the internet. You call yourself a health professional and your reasoning is “I’m just not interested” what? Screening saves lives.
  • @source5729
Thermal mammograms, ultrasounds, etc. There ARE options, but doctors aren’t trained in those & don’t want to pay for new equipment
  • @Faye.h.uk123
Get your screenings, ladies. Saved my life at 32. Could save yours.

This is absolutely untrue. Also my great aunt died of breast cancer because she NEVER GOT A MAMMOGRAM. She thought because her breast's weren't being used or touched. she couldn't get it. turns out if she had a scan routinely. she would be here today. Rip Cathy. but u even said how dumb u were frr. GET UR SCAN
