That place is so abandoned that all the food shops in the food court closed down except for some espresso bar.

laughing at this new plan, back in the day when birdcage walk opened with real bird cages and all the apartments around new, it all failed to this stage the area is run down around take down all the old down apartments around at the same time and do a total revamp, we used to cruise the mall in the 70s with thousands of people was a great time

that white security truck has been there for years , broke down
  • Newpark Mall down in Newark, CA tried to do the same and after spending millions it's still a dead mall.

Who even goes to the sunrise mall anymore. The same can be said of birdcage across the street.

The city of Citrus Heights' ambitious plan for this piece of property will NEVER happen because they don't even own a single square foot of it. You have multiple property owners like majority owner Namdar Realty, which is the biggest 'slumlord' mall owner in the U.S. Namdar will own a property for decades and put almost zero maintenance/investment into it, hence the reason why Sunrise looks like it does now. Namdar is also just giving the city a line of bull about participating in revitalizing it-- just to keep them off their back. Ethan Conrad Properties owns the former Sears property and threw a coat of paint on the building and called it a "remodel". Laughable. He'll lease it out to anybody. A private school moving into the old Sears Parts & Service building? What a weird choice of tenant. That corner of Sunrise & Greenback is a sizable piece of land with a great traffic count that's good for something along the lines of alternative retail like "The Americana" in Glendale, which doesn't exist right now in Sacramento. BUT, that will only happen if one committed developer with deep pockets gets ahold of the WHOLE property.... and it likely won't happen. The most likely scenario is the mall property will be sold off piecemeal over decades and will be haphazardly developed... and the city of Citrus Heights will cave & end up approving multiple unremarkable run-of-the-mill projects over the years because they need the tax dollars badly.
