John Constable was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Inspired by Thomas Gainsborough, The English landscape painter John Constable once wrote, “I should paint my own places best.” This precept guided his career, as Constable developed a unique style combining objective studies of nature with a deeply personal vision of the countryside round his boyhood home of Suffolk.

  • Excellent presentation in sharing an evolving Constable with the background of his life…..from childhood to deaths of family……this is REALLY THE BEST of social media to be shared with all as life long learners…..
  • I spent many a delightful afternoon, with my little box of watercolor paints, painting in the Dedham Vale, and along the River Stour. ^^

I remember this being one of my favorite paintings from Art History in college. Saw it at the NY Museum of Art. I remember being surprised at the size of the painting. Ironic that it was in one of the most anti-nature places in the world, NYC. Still, the feelings it evokes, and the illustration of the life we should lead as humans, is a reminder to resist the constant static pull of the matrix.

The personal value of a Painting is how one received and interprets, thus the visual feeling(s), and the message interpreted Feeling(s). How a painting makes you feel. There's all the "Physical Components" that are layered in determining a Painting's monetary value, but that 8s a whole separate subject, although it is also influenced by the Feeling(s) the Painting evokes. The "Feeling(s)" John Countable conveys are quite that of our being secure, a warm, calm, feeling, a touch 9f fresh country air upon 9ur cheek, the soft smell of nature and various scents of flowers, the shuttle chirps of birds in the background, and a most positive feeling of being in the state of Harmony, within self, and with the environment. A series of physical responses occur, and each a most positive value for the observer. There's little wonder, John Countable's very well deserved acclaim.
  • The painting of Stonehenge is probably his only work I really have time for. The rest seem mundane, but then again I love the Mountains and the coast. His skill is without doubt but I wish he had ventured further.
  • I think that with The Hay Wain he painted happiness, or how life is meant to be.
