Historical trivia: John the Armenian was a real historical character who served under Belisarius' command in the Vandalic war. Shortly after the final battle against Vandals where the Romans were victorious, John was accidentally killed by one of Belisarius' men (I believe by an arrow). Hopefully he fares better under Lionheart's experienced and capable hands.

Here's a little something for all of you lovers of Roman history. As we see in this episode, the Vandalic king, Gelimer, is killed by Belisarius' forces in the Battle of Hadrumentum, subsequently leaving control of his kingdom in the hands of his brother, Ammatas. Historically, however, this is not the case. According to the Roman historian Procopius, Gelimer fled to the western Vandal border next to Numidia after the Battle of Ad Decimum, where he was cut off by Pharas, another Eastern Roman general. When the bulk of his army led by his brother, Tzazo, returned from an expedition to Sardinia, which had broken off from the Vandalic rule, Gelimer than faced off against Belisarius one last time at the Battle of Tricamarum in December of 533. Gelimer received his last defeat, fleeing for his life once again before finally surrendering to Roman forces in March of 534. He was then paraded through the streets of Constantinople during the triumphal parade of Belisarius, shouting, "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity." This was a verse from Ecclesiastes 1:2. While some might have expected Emperor Justinian to have the Vandalic king executed in some grandiose way before the masses, this was not to be, surprisingly. In return for his surrender, Gelimer's life and the lives of his family were spared, and they were granted vast tracts of land and estates in Galatia where he lived out the rest of his days in relative ease and peace. He died in the year 553 in Anatolia.

Love Atilla being back! What a game that was. One of my favourites! The army should be called: 'The Wrath of Rome'

Your "toyboy" remark at 35:32 is actually more correct than you realize, Lionheart. Antonina was indeed older than Belisarius and had been very close friends with Justinian's (also older) wife, the notorious Empress Theodora. Allegedly (and there is debate about this because of the somewhat problematic sources these allegations come from), they were both colleagues of one another in their earlier lives when they were both ... "professional companions" let's just politely call them. Justinian became infatuated with Theodora, made her his empress, and she in turn did her friend and former colleague a solid and matched her with Belisarius. They would both go on to be somewhat domineering (and often scandalous) figures in their respective husbands' lives.

Hmm, i don't know how I feel about Belisarius going rogue. What made him truly special was his steadfast loyalty, a rare trait in the Roman empire.
  • I love Attila's story-driven events, adds more favour and some RPG mechanics. But, overall I prefer Rome 2. I think there is a story-driven event where you can choose to go seperatist, it might be when you take Ravenna. I'm not sure.
  • Why not name Belisarius's army "Restitutoris Orbis" (Restorers of the World i believe) just like Aurelian did when he reunited the Roman Empire? And for John the Armenian army i would suggest Legio Armeniaca (I should apologize in advance for my lack of creativity lol)

Love being back in Attila, feel it's underrated as a total war game

  • @Havermeyer7908
I am so incredibly hyped. I’ve been working my way through your Western Roman Empire playthrough for the second time and I’m exited to see Atilla once more
  • @CelticWarband
Your cavalry unit took massive casualties because you were putting it under the towers when capturing. Keep the unit at a distance when capturing as the towers collapse when they are captured and kill units that are close to it.

Made me feel so old when you mentioned your west Rome campaign was started in 2020! Feels like only a couple months ago.
  • @chenghan990
I had no big problem capturing the Roman settlements in the late game. You bring 2 or 3 armies and there is no issue. One point of attention was those rewarded armies because some of them, or maybe all of them, are free for a while but then it becomes quite hard to afford them. I found it best to have a few hords focus primarily on military and others on food production.
