In this interview, Dr. Soo Yeon Lyuh—a master haegeum instrumentalist, composer, improvisor—discusses her personal background and musical career. Dr. Lyuh shares her trajectory as a musician, from early childhood experiences, to dedication in rigorous professional training in Korean traditional music, to endeavors to spread Korean culture aboard, and to current innovative pursuits in composition and performance of fusion and experimental music. Dr. Lyuh briefly explains fundamental concepts of traditional Korean music. She also elaborates on her compositional processes, musical inspirations, and her general interpretation of the significance of music.
