Cinema is a visual language.
This much is true across all forms; for this reason, the visual language is, in my opinion, the most beautiful and nuanced beyond all others. After all, just one image truly can be worth a multitude of words, and each of these words can be nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
However, in cinema, images don’t just exist separate from each other as they often do in their predecessor craft, still photography. In cinema, images corroborate with one another and derive exponential more meaning than any one image can.
For this reason, the language of cinematic imagery is able to tell a story in a way that no other language on Earth can. Perfectly unique.
Such is the case for the beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Here is an in-depth look at some of the ways in which this show harnesses the cinematic language to convey character, emotion, and plot.
